Auctioneer's Note: This is a rare opportunity to own a part of the history of early Topeka. The John Sargent House (1882-1885) built this two story L-shaped limestone Late Gothic Revival house which stands on a limestone foundation. A two-story gable roofed limestone addition to the west was added in 1910.

The Gothic Revival Style is characterized by steeply pitched roof with cross gables. Angle entry on the house aligns with the Capital Dome which is visible from the upper windows. The John Sargent House reflects all the design characteristics that are commonly found in the Gothic Revival Style house. The house maintains a high degree of architectural integrity. John Sargent resided in the house until his death on March 16, 1916.

JOHN SARGENT was and is an honored name in the State of Kansas. For years he was foremost among the building contractors of Topeka. The power he exerted as a factor in business affairs was only part of the outflowing of a strong and harmonious character. He was a big man in all the relationships of a long lifetime. (more)

The house is listed on the National Register #95000930.
